App for truck drivers to receive services at fueling stations and road services
Монополия.АЗС mobile app
About the project
Cargo carriers get access to discounts at partner gas stations and road services by entering into a service contract. So we decided to create a handy digital tool for their drivers. Cargo carriers provide drivers with real-time information about available services and limits with no need to call them often.
My role
I am the only designer on this product in a team of 2 product owners and developers. Android development outsourced. I am working on the interface and taking my part in the research from scratch to the present.
Application and Market
Before the app
Network of partner filling stations was smaller and it was enough for truckers to give his vehicle registration certificate number and PIN. Driver comes to the station cashier, tells the amount of the fuel he needs and starts fueling at the pump.
Problem
The coverage of partner gas stations needed to be expanded to cover more regions and routes. Many gas stations, for example, Gazprom, can only fill up at the pump through the app, just calling the VRC will no longer work. So at this point we need an app.
Solution and first steps
Rosneft was our first integration with the fueling by a barcode, it contains the registration certificate number and PIN. We tested the OSM map, encountered technical difficulties, and increased our expertise in mobile development.

UX / UI design
Design-system, components and basic app UI
By the time we started our fueling app development there already was the fist app in company — Monopoly.Business for individual entrepreneurs. Designer of this product led extension of our design system for Android. Later I and other designers were involved in the development of components for Android.
Some examples of Android components:

The first app and common components
We took in our app all the text styles, inputs, buttons, checkboxes, headers and bottom navigation, start screen and the whole authorization layouts, also some of the list items and lesser components. Icons too, of'course.
What did we add
First of all, it is map and all the related items. Some of the components were reused from our web-platform — service tags at the bottom of the map, for example, and fueling method tags in the service card. Web-platform Monopoly.online is a work tool for drivers' supervisors, so those tags should be identical both ways. And some other elements as well.
First MVP
Minimum functionality at the start: a map with gas stations, gas station cards and fueling by barcode. Roadmap on the functionality for the next 2-3 months: search by address, filters by fuel, support and documentation section.
New fueling integrations and capabilities
After MVP we started to work on the refueling at the pump protocol. In addition to fuel, Monopoly began to provide road services like repair, washing, tire fitting, etc. They were added to the app as well but in view-functionality for now. Now we are remodeling the fueling methods and adding the prices for the truckers so they can make decision and find the cheapest fuel price.

Final design and functionality
Authorization and map
Phone number required for authorization must be in our database. If the correct number is entered, the SMS code is required — and you can use the application without restrictions. If user cannot enter the code for some reasons or wish not to do so it is possible to get access to the map with some restrictions. For example, it is unable to get information about the allowed types of fuel and its prices or use road services.

Gas and service stations: user can search by address and use filters. If the geolocation request is approved user can see how far away the stations are. User can also build a route with another apps on the smartphone allow to do it.
Operation history
This is the first iteration and the simplest one — what, how much and when. The most important information for user is the final order (removing the lone wheel) not the types of service (tire fitting, carwash or cafe) so it comes first. It is possible to add filters with categories and date of the operation picking.
Limits
Often truckers have no understanding of how much liters of fuel available for them, can they wash their truck or use this parking and how many times a day or week. There is an information about available liters in the fuel card and yet it appears to be not really noticeably. So before we begin the card redesign we decide to release the limits page with all this information. It is really important for trucker to be absolutely sure what services he can use right now, not then.
Fueling and Service cards
At the fueling stations driver usually can refuel with the app - using barcode or the app itself at the pump without visiting cashier.
As for the road services he cannot yet do the same: there's just information about the available services for now.
Refueling by barcode
Refueling at Rosneft: trucker have to choose the fuel he needs, then he enters the volume and after that gets the barcode for this refueling operation.
Refueling at the stations with our terminal: trucker tells the volume of the fuel he needs at the cashier.

Refueling at the pump
Pump fueling method is used at the NESTE (prepaid and postpaid), Gazprom and Sibneftecard (only prepaid) stations.
For Gazprom and Sibneftecard the most important thing is gun position: it must or must not be taken off before the refueling confirmation, we inform about it on the interface.

Pump is translating the fueling process by the API and the app displays to the user the related screens with illustrations and texts. After successful refueling we let the user confirm to have a sense of control over the situation.
Statistics
General amount of users
The graph below shows the total number of app users. You can see a decrease in the number of users in October, we suppose the infamous events are the main reason.

Problems and solutions
Old phones
Overwhelming majority of users are truck drivers who are asked to install the app for refueling at Rosneft and NESTE, and it requires a smartphone. Yet many drivers still have brickphones and it is more difficult for them to accept the new ways.
In this situation we are trying to solve the problem through their employers: tell them about the advantages, how they can save money on the services and convince (in a very polite way of 'course) them to buy corporate smartphones for the truck fleet.
Support requests
Many requests from users come to our support department: «How can I refuel?» or «How can I use the app?». But it is not really informative because there's no description of the problems driver faced. So I asked my colleagues from support to be more specific in their descriptions in every case. It will help us and me personally in the discovery process and to form the backlog.
Difficulties at the pump
Each of our integrations has its own peculiarities of work, most of the difficulties arise at the pump. For some fueling station brands it is critical that the pistol is on the pump before refueling, for others the pistol must be taken off. We've added help screens before the start of the refueling scenario to draw the driver's attention. After the release, the number of errors at those fueling stations was reduced by three times.
